How To

Setting up the homepage:

Feature Pitch’s homepage has quite a few different sections, which are controlled in different ways.

#1: Featured Page
The featured content on the home page (i.e. the “Unpackage this box” module) is essentially a page within WP that you can set up as follows:

  1. Go to Pages > Add New.
  2. Complete the page title & content (which will be displayed in the active panel in the featured tabber) as you would for any other WP page.
  3. Now scroll down to the “Custom Settings” section and complete the following fields:
  4. Images: This is the image that will be displayed on the left-hand side of the module. This image isn’t dynamically resized so make sure you use an image with the correct width and height. Our recommended dimensions are around 270 pixels for the width and 290 pixels for the height.
  5. Page Excerpt: This is the little description that is displayed along with the page name.
  6. Button Text (Optional) If you’d like a nice button on this panel, please include the text that should go on top of the button.
  7. Button Link / URL (Optional) Include the destination link / URL for where the button (specified above) should be linking to.
  8. Publish the page.

Now you would need to go to the Pages > Edit tab and collect the ID’s of the various pages that you want to include in the tabber. Once you have all the ID’s, you need to go to the “Feature Pitch” tab and include those ID’s as a comma-separated list in the “Pages for Tabber” option (under Homepage Settings).

#2: Mini Featured Pages
The small page snippets and images below the featured page are controlled in the exact same way as the main featured page, just follow the process above and then enter a comma seperated list of the page IDs you’d like to display here. They will appear in a 3 X 3 format.

Setting up the blog:

The idea behind Feature Pitch was that it would be used by corporates to showcase their products, whilst also offering a blog that is not being displayed on the frontpage. Even though you will be able to add blog posts as normal, the blog requires a bit of setup first.

  1. Go to Categories in the WP admin panel. Create a new category with name “Blog” and category slug “blog” (this can be different – just remember these, as we need it later). This first category is just a placeholder.
  2. That means you need to now add your real categories (i.e. News, Announcements, New Products etc.) as sub-categories to your main category.
  3. When adding posts, you would ideally only add posts to the sub-categories and not the main category itself. You would thus not need to select the main category when adding new posts, because it is automatically included once you have selected any sub-category.
  4. Go to Feature Pitch Options. Enter the category slug i.e. /category/blog/ (where “blog” is the slug you entered in step 1) in the “Blog Permalink” field.
  5. Select the “Add Blog Link to Main Navigation” option to add the blog link to the main navigation section on your template.
  6. All of your posts will now be displayed on the Blog page, as well as the news section of the homepage.

Note: You may find this tutorial helpful to find page / category ID’s & slugs.

Setting up the page templates

  1. Go to Pages > Add New in the WP admin panel.
  2. Simply fill in the page title, which can be anything, and then ignore the page body content.
  3. Scroll down to the “Page Templates” box and select the page template you’d like to use (see the screenshot below).
  4. And publish!

Embedding videos & using the video player

You’ll note that version 1.1 of Feature Pitch includes the ability to easily embed videos within any of your posts. This is done via simply pasting your video’s embedding code (from YouTube, Vimeo etc) into the Video Embed Code field within the Feature Pitch Custom Settings pane (on Post > Add New or Post > Edit). This will then automatically resize the video and embed it at the top of the post template.

Sidebar Video Player
In addition, you can then tag that post with “video”, which will allow you to display all of your videos in the sidebar. Once tagged, you will also need to add the Woo – Video Player widget to the appropriate sidebar.

Setting up the Campaign Monitor widget:
For the first time in a WooTheme, we’ve included a newsletter subscription widget for the very popular marketing service – Campaign Monitor. Here’s a brief run down on how you can set up the widget:

  1. In your Campaign Monitor control panel, click on “Manage Subscribers” and select the subscription list which you want to add subscription options to your Abstract installation.
  2. On the next page, you’ll find a “Create a Subscribe form” link on your right-hand side, which you should click. Thereafter only select “E-mail Address” and click the “Generate the code” button.
  3. You will now be presented with a screenshot like below, where you can find the two variables (“Your Campaign Monitor Form Action” and “Your Campaign Monitor ID”), which is required by the Woo – Campaign Monitor Subscription widget.
  4. In this case your Form Action would be “http://woothemes.createsend.com/t/y/s/jdlhuk/” and your ID would be “jdlhuk-jdlhuk” (as highlighted in the screenshot below).
