How To
The Olya Home Page
Olya is a sophisticated portfolio theme that allows you to very easily publish your work, whether that be images, or videos. Not only that, but you can also showcase your portfolio pieces via the nifty Portfolio custom post type.
Below is a screenshot of the Olya home page with each of it’s modules explained.
Creating A Slide
It’s a very easy process to create slides for your homepage using Olya. Once you activate the theme it registers a custom post type called Slides. Simply click on “Slides” then “Add New” to add a new one. From there you can fill out the title, add a video embed code or url for the slide image to link to. Of course from there you can add an image to your slide.
The slide can also easily handle anything inside the edit window as well. You can create a slide with text and pictures embedded in the content itself as shown in our demo.
Creating Your Portfolio
We’ve made it really easy to create and add to your portfolio using Olya. To setup your portfolio page simply create a new page and then assign the portfolio page template to it.
Once you’ve done that your page will look like this, if it doesn’t don’t worry as we’ll go over adding portfolio content below.
Adding portfolio items to your WordPress backend
The portfolio section also uses a custom post type called “Portfolio”.
- Add a new portfolio item in WordPress (Portfolio -> Add New)
- Add a title to the portfolio item
- Add some text in the content to describe the portfolio item
- Upload the Portfolio image in the Featured Image area in the right sidebar if using the WordPress Thumbnail option. Alternatively you can upload the image using the Custom Settings field and enable TimThumb in the options panel.
- Add a video embed code in the embed field in the custom settings panel if you want to show a video. You will still need to add an image for your portfolio item which is showed on homepage and portfolio page template.
- Select or create a Portfolio Gallery to organize your posts.
- Publish the portfolio item and repeat for next portfolio item.
Adding Multiple Portfolio Images
Adding multiple images to a portfolio post is very simple. When you’re uploading the featured image you want to use outlined in the steps above, simply upload all the images you want to use here. Then pick from there the one you want to be your featured image for that post. That image will be the one shown as the thumbnail in the slider and main portfolio page. Also be sure that the other images are set as an attachment page and not image file, this should be the WordPress default though.
Adding Mini-Features
Just below the slider area and recent portfolio posts is an area we call Mini-Features. Included in Olya are 4 mini feature areas to show any part of your business. The theme registers a custom post type called Mini-Features and to add a new one simply click on “Mini-Features” then “Add New.”
This presents you with a traditional title and content area to describe the Mini-Feature. Below that in the Olya Custom Settings you can set an icon, the excerpt, and even link it to an external link.
Here is how the Mini-Features appear on your homepage.
Creating A Team Page
Creating a team page is super easy. Just as you assigned the portfolio page template earlier to create the portfolio page, do the same for the team page. Create a new page and simply assign the team page template to it.
This page template pulls in all of the users on your site, great if you have multiple authors or team members on your site.
Creating A Contact Page
We’ve included a great contact page template that you can assign just as we did with the other two pages. Our contact page template not only includes the contact form it also pulls in your latest tweet, your companies address in the left sidebar, as well as the location of your business.
