Setting up the default homepage

The Station has two home page layouts available. The default homepage has quite a few different sections, which are controlled in different ways. Please refer to the following image and the applicable explanations below to setup the homepage as on our demo:

#1: Featured Tabber
The featured tabber uses some nice jQuery to tab between different pages that you have specified within WP. Each of the “panels” / tabs (there are 4 on the right of the demo) are essentially a page within WP and you can set up one of these pages as follow (you would need to do this for each page that you want to display in the tabber):

  1. Go to Pages > Add New.
  2. Complete the page titlte & content (which will be displayed in the active panel in the featured tabber) as you would for any other WP page.
  3. Now scroll down to the “The Station Custom Settings” section and complete the following three fields:
  4. Page Description: This is the little description that is displayed along with the page name in the tabs on the right-hand side.
  5. Button Text (Optional) If you’d like a nice button on this panel, please include the text that should go on top of the button.
  6. Button Link / URL (Optional) Include the destination link / URL for where the button (specified above) should be linking to.
  7. Publish the page.

Now you would need to go to the Pages > Edit tab and collect the ID’s of the various pages that you want to include in the tabber. Once you have all the ID’s, you need to go to the “The Station” tab and include those ID’s as a comma-separated list in the “Pages for Tabber” option (under Homepage Settings).

#2: Introduction Page
This is just a standard page that you need to create within WP. Once you have created the page and collected its Page ID, then you need to go to the “The Station” tab and include that ID in the “Introduction Page Field”.

#3 & #4: Small Introduction Page – Left & Right
These pages need to be created in a similar way to the pages for the Featured Tabber:

  1. Go to Pages > Add New.
  2. Complete the page titlte & content as you would for any other WP page.
  3. Now scroll down to the “The Station Custom Settings” section and complete the following three fields:
  4. Button Text (Optional) If you’d like a nice button on this panel, please include the text that should go on top of the button.
  5. Button Link / URL (Optional) Include the destination link / URL for where the button (specified above) should be linking to.
  6. Publish the page.

Now you would need to go to the Pages > Edit tab and collect the ID’s of the various pages that you want to include in the tabber. Once you have all the ID’s, you need to go to the “The Station” tab and include those ID’s in the “Small Introduction Page – Left / Right” respectively.

#5: Sidebar
The sidebar is widgetized and is controlled via Appearance > Widgets. Please see section #5 below for more details on this.
Note: You may find this tutorial helpful to find page / category ID’s & slugs.

Setting up the magazine homepage

As can be seen below you can set the amount of posts the scroller must scroll through. These are the latest posts published, or the sticky posts if any have been enabled.

The secondary articles are the blog posts that appear two by two below the scroller. You can set the amount of blog posts you would like to appear here.

An example:

The total amount of posts is set in WP Settings > Reading. Say you set that to 10 posts. If you have 3 featured posts, and 4 recent posts set in the theme options then the amount of posts shown below in the “more articles” section is 3 (which makes 3+4+3 = 10).

If you then make a post sticky, it will come in addition to these 10 posts.

So if you have a total of 10 posts in WP settings > Reading, and have 4 sticky posts, then a total of 14 posts will show, 7 of which will show in “more articles” section.

Setup Blog

To add a Blog to the main navigation, simply follow these steps:

  1. Add a new Page in WordPress (Page -> Add New)
  2. Add a title to the page e.g. “Blog”
  3. Select the Blog page template in the Attributes panel on the right

If you are unsure on how to setup a page template, have a look at our instructional video in our Page Template section.

Adding a video to the video player widget

The widgetized video player that can be placed anywhere in the sidebar is controlled quite simply and explained below.

To add a video post to appear in the video player in the sidebar you need to add a new post, or edit and existing one, and navigate to the bottom of the post where “The Station Custom Settings” panel is.

Add a picture to your post for thumbnail view, and the embed code of the video, found on most streaming video sites. Don’t worry about resizing the video embed code’s width and height as this will be done automatically.

Your video post can be in any category, but the important thing is that it is tagged “video”. The first 4 posts tagged “video” will appear in the video player widget.

Widgets

Custom Widgets

The theme includes 6 custom widgets that you can add to your widgetized area:

Setting up the Campaign Monitor widget:
For the first time in a WooTheme, we’ve included a newsletter subscription widget for the very popular marketing service – Campaign Monitor. Here’s a brief run down on how you can set up the widget:

  1. In your Campaign Monitor control panel, click on “Manage Subscribers” and select the subscription list which you want to add subscription options to your Abstract installation.
  2. On the next page, you’ll find a “Create a Subscribe form” link on your right-hand side, which you should click. Thereafter only select “E-mail Address” and click the “Generate the code” button.
  3. You will now be presented with a screenshot like below, where you can find the two variables (“Your Campaign Monitor Form Action” and “Your Campaign Monitor ID”), which is required by the Woo – Campaign Monitor Subscription widget.
  4. In this case your Form Action would be “http://woothemes.createsend.com/t/y/s/jdlhuk/” and your ID would be “jdlhuk-jdlhuk” (as highlighted in the screenshot below).
